Settlers first arrived in the Eagle River Valley around 1874, which at the time was a summer fishing and hunting (elk, deer, and buffalo)
site for the Ute Amerindians. The English settlers were said to have named the area "Avon" after the Avon River Valley in England, of
William Shakespeare fame. Avon's place-name ties to England didn't stop there; the Nottingham family was one of those families that moved
to the area after the arrival of the railroad in the late 1880's, and Nottingham Park, Nottingham Rock, Nottingham Road, and Nottingham
Ranch Road were all named in their honor.
The Town of Avon wasn't incorporated until February 24, 1978 (yes, that's a "19," not an "18"), but had a permanent population of 1,500
by 1988, 3,000 by 1998, and over 6,000 by 2004. Today Avon is considered the commercial heart of the Eagle River Valley, and is the gateway
to the Beaver Creek Resort two miles to the south.
