Broomfield's population had grown to 6,000 by the time it incorporated in 1961, and Broomfield's first high school started classes in
the fall of 1964. The city annexed south into Jefferson County and east of Main Street in 1969, annexed Greenway Park in 1970 and a small
portion of Adams County in 1971, then the Westlake Village subdivision in 1972. In 1988 and 1989, Broomfield annexed north into Weld
County as well.
In 1998, ground was broken on Flatiron Crossing mall, thus assuring Broomfield of a retail sales tax base and setting the stage for the
next phase in Broomfield's development. To alleviate the confusion in accessing city services caused by Broomfield's expansion over
four counties, an amendment to Colorado's state constitution (S.C.R. 98-13, passed November 3, 1998 and effective November 15, 2001)
created the City and County of Broomfield.
