Colorado climbing season is generally considered June through mid-September. June is the rainiest month in the season, and afternoon
thunderstorms (
one of the biggest risk factors in climbing Fourteeners) are most common in July and August. September can be one
of the best months to climb, but early snows are possible in September. Individual peaks each have best climbing times which might vary
from the traditional climbing season for various reasons.
Winter mountain climbing is not unheard of, however, and some trails are actually easier on spring snow than during the summer. But
safety should always be your Number One priority, and it's recommended that you try more traditional winter activities if you have
hesitations about driving and/or climbing in winter mountain conditions.
