Sarah dropped the hand, and shivered in the morning cold. “Never or not really?”
Ingram looked at her for the first time. “How ‘bout never not really?”
Now Sarah smiled an exasperated smile on the verge of cracking. “What do you mean, Ingram?”
Ingram rose from the boulder he had been resting upon. “You’ll never find that lost connection. I won’t let you.”
Sarah rose to meet him. “And what if I already know who your lost connection is?” She took a step closer, eyes upturned. “What if I tell you who your lost connection is?”
Ingram smiled into the broken spell. “You’ll never tell, and neither will I. Goodbye, Sarah.”
Sarah held back her sudden tears. “Goodbye, Ingram.”
Ingram turned on and upward with his back turned from Sarah, avoiding the footholes and climbing, climbing, climbing to touch the Colorado sky.
