BILL HAMMONS' GUIDE TO COLORADO FOURTEENERS

Fourteeners in Colorado's Elk Mountains

The Elk Mountains are a high mountain range southwest of Aspen. The Elks are a formidable barrier to travel and are traversed only by backroads and trails. While the range has been mined since the days of the Colorado Silver Boom, the only mining activity today is the mining of coal on the western and southern flanks. The Elks receive a great deal of snowfall due to their position on the west side of the Continental Divide (hence the world reknown of Aspen as a ski destination).

The Elk Mountains' Fourteeners include:

  • Capitol Peak
  • Castle Peak
  • Maroon Peak
  • Pyramid Peak
  • Snowmass Mtn.
