Grand County, Colorado was created on February 2, 1874, with territory carved out of Summit County stretching to the northern and
western borders of the state. Grand County was named after Grand Lake and the Grand River, both located within its borders. Routt County
was created on January 29, 1877, and Grand County was reduced to the borders it's retained ever since, borders retained despite a mineral
rights dispute between Grand and Larimer counties over North Park which was decided by the Colorado Supreme Court in 1886 (Grand County
lost).
As of the year 2000, Grand County had a population of 12,442.
