Gunbarrel, Colorado began as a 668-acre subdivision built in 1963, shortly after the construction of IBM's plant near the intersection of 63rd Street and State Highway 119. The City of Boulder had agreed to extend utilities to Gunbarrel and to annex the new community to Boulder within three to five years. The utilities came, but annexation never did (though the area is governed by Boulder City Council, and Gunbarrel residents have rejected two annexation attempts). Gunbarrel's residents are served by volunteer firefighters, and in 1993 a General Improvement District was established to acquire open space and improve streets.
