“Good day, mein Führer.” Goebbels slapped his chest and turned towards the aircraft that had carried him to the base, crossing paths with the squad of guards who rushed to catch up with the man continuing on to Block Two.

“I want to thank all of you gentlemen, as well as you, Frau Meitner, for coming here to Weitnau.”

“There is no need to thank us, Herr Hitler, seeing as how we were not asked if we would like to come.”

Halstead looked away from the chalk board two guards had wheeled into the common area, and smiled down at the sweatered professor with wild hair sitting at one end of the semicircle of chairs laid out for the hostage physicists. “I understand your frustration at being kept here, Doctor Einstein, but you must understand that every effort at complete secrecy must be made.”

“Well, I’ll agree that you’ve made every effort at complete secrecy, Herr Hitler,” Einstein retorted as he leaned away from the dictator and his chalkboard. “It was certainly an effort to send your armed thugs to drag myself and my family out of bed in the middle of the night.”

“Herr Doktor—”

“Do not ‘Herr Doktor’ me, Herr Hitler,” Einstein interjected as he leaned forward with his hands clasped, “You’re a tyrant!”

“Tyrant I might be, Einstein. Think of me however you like. You’re all here for a very special purpose, an opportunity to be of great service to Germany.”

“And what is this opportunity that you speak of?” a voice called out from the end of the semicircle opposite Einstein.
