Mount Democrat, with an elevation of 14,148 feet, is the 28th highest Fourteener in the state of Colorado. Democrat was named in opposition to the nearby and higher Mount Lincoln by a group which disliked that other mountain's Republican namesake. This peak is considered an excellent first Fourteener to climb from Kite Lake, but can also be bagged with Mounts Lincoln and Bross. Please note that, as of June 2005, some landowners are blocking access to Mounts Bross, Democrat, and Lincoln because of potential liabilities; prior permission is needed to climb these mountains.

To reach the trailhead, head north from the town of Fairplay along Colorado 9. Take a left turn through the center of Alma, following a small sign directing you to Kite Lake six miles distant. Here at the trailhead there is a small fee to park, as well as camp if you choose to do so. From the trailhead, head north past some mining buildings, then turn left and up through a short series of switchbacks to a saddle. From this point take a left into more switchbacks (the easier route), or head straight up the ridge to the summit (beware of a false summit).
