OPEN PRIMARY

An Open Primary is a primary in which any registered voter may participate, regardless of his or her party affiliation. California's June 2012 primary has been described as an Open Primary, though it is more accurately a Jungle Primary, in which the top two winners of an Open Primary advance to the General Election, also regardless of party affiliation (indeed, November General Election showdowns between pairs like Democrats Howard Berman and Brad Sherman were created by the 2012 California Primary).
