PAKISTANI POLITICS GUIDE
Pakistan's System of Government: Federal Republic
Pakistani politics occur within a system of government that has at times been Parliamentary, Presidential, or semi-Presidential. In the current Parliamentary system, the
President of Pakistan (who is constitutionally required to be a Muslim) is the largely-ceremonial Head of State, the Prime Minister is head of
government, and there is a multi-party system.
Pakistan's political system, while founded in ideals (the President is chosen by an Electoral College and term-limited, much like the American
President), has had a history of instability: the country has experienced multiple periods of military rule, the President's power to dissolve
the National Assembly has been twice granted by Constitutional Amendment and twice revoked by Constitutional Amendment, and numerous armed
conflicts have been fought with neighboring India.
