BILL HAMMONS' AMERICAN POLITICS GUIDE: TOTAL POLITICS

Commissioning Political Polls for a Campaign

In 2008, I commissioned a poll late in my Congressional campaign. The information was very useful and well worth the $500; I was provided with the names and addresses of all positive responders and took a break from a day of canvassing to spend an afternoon driving around a pocket of support in Thornton and Northglenn which I had plotted on Google Maps.

Unfortunately, I experienced a steadily sinking feeling as I drove around, knocked on a few doors of those in question, and realized that my support consisted primarily of the "None of the Above" vote in the middle of the Housing Crisis; most of those polled who expressed support for my campaign responded from homes in neighborhoods with high foreclosure rates or from apartment buildings that didn't seem to be the first choice of their residents.

It's important to keep in mind that polls are arbitrary by nature; often the manner in which the question is asked is more important than the question itself.
