Michele Marie Bachmann (née Amble; born April 6, 1956) is the US Representative for
Minnesota's
6th Congressional District, serving since 2007. Bachmann is a former tax attorney who
served in the Minnesota State Senate and is the first Republican woman to
represent the state in Congress. Bachmann is a supporter of the Tea Party movement and
is described as the "Founder of the Congressional Tea Party Caucus."
In the late Eighties and early Nineties, represented the IRS as a US Treasury Attorney,
prosecuting hundreds of cases against those who had failed to pay their taxes. Over
approximately a decade beginning in the mid-Nineties, the Bachmann family farm in which she
owns a stake received over a quarter of a million dollars in Federal crop price support
subsidies.
One of the highlights of Bachmann's legislative record is the Light Bulb Freedom of Choice
Act.
At a June 2011 Republican Presidential debate in New Hampshire, Bachmann announced
that she had filed the paperwork necessary to run for the Presidency in 2012.
Bachmann announced the suspension of her Presidential campaign in early January 2012, after
a disappointing sixth-place finish in the Iowa caucuses.
