Former Vice President Dick Cheney of Wyoming (R)
Potential 2012 Candidate for President of the United States
Richard Bruce "Dick" Cheney (born January 30, 1941) served as the 46th Vice President of the United States from 2001 to 2009
under George W. Bush. He briefly served as Acting President of the United States on two occasions while Bush underwent
medical procedures.
Cheney was raised in Casper, Wyoming. He began his political career as an intern for Congressman William Steiger and eventually
worked his way into the White House during the Nixon and Ford administrations; he served in the latter administration as
White House Chief of Staff. In 1978, Cheney was elected to the US House of Representatives from Wyoming; he was reelected five
times, eventually becoming House Minority Whip. Cheney was selected to be the Secretary of Defense during the presidency of
George H. W. Bush, holding the position until the end of Bush's term. During this time, Cheney oversaw the 1989 invasion of Panama
to capture Manuel Noriega, helped direct Operations Desert Shield in 1990 and Desert Storm in 1991, and sent the first American
troops into Somalia in 1992.
Out of office during the Clinton presidency, Cheney was Chairman and CEO of Halliburton from 1995 to 2000.
"Cheney 2012" has been floated by, among others, Cheney's daughter Liz, but talk of a Cheney candidacy died out in late 2009 /
early 2010; the draftcheney2012.com website was last updated in February 2010, and, as of December 2010, had an Alexa.com
ranking of 22,487,591 (i.e., the site was receiving virtually no traffic).
