2012 Candidate for President of the United States
(Also Ran)
Timothy James "Tim" Pawlenty was Governor of Minnesota until early 2011. Pawlenty was re-elected in 2006 with only 46% of the vote and, in
2009, announced that he would not seek re-election in 2010. In 2010, the Minnesota Supreme Court ruled that Pawlenty had exceeded his authority
by using unallotment to balance a state budget 6 billion dollars in the hole.
In 2008, Pawlenty was mentioned as a possible pick for John McCain's Vice Presidential running mate, but McCain eventually chose Alaska
Governor Sarah Palin. In late 2009, Pawlenty began taking steps that many saw as leading to a 2012 Presidential bid, among those steps
visiting Iowa multiple times making political speeches. In May 2011, Pawlenty reinforced his focus on Iowa by releasing a video candidacy
announcement the night before formally announcing his Presidential candidacy at a town hall forum in Iowa.
Pawlenty withdrew his candidacy in August 2011, hours after placing a distant third in the Republican Ames, Iowa Straw Poll.
