David Howell Petraeus (born November 7, 1952) is a United States Army General who has served as the top commander in both Iraq and Afghanistan, as well as the Commander of US Central Command, which oversees American forces in both the Middle East and Central Asia. Petraeus has a Bachelor of Science degree from the United States Military Academy at West Point, and graduated in 1974 as a distinguished cadet (top 5% of his class). He was the General George C. Marshall Award winner as the top graduate of the US Army Command and General Staff College class of 1983. He subsequently earned an MPA in 1985 and a PhD in International Relations in 1987 from the Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs at Princeton University. He later served as Assistant Professor of International Relations at West Point and also completed a fellowship at Georgetown University.

Some news reports have speculated that Petraeus may have an interest in running for the Presidency, especially after he visited a school known for hosting the Presidential debates, New Hampshire's Saint Anselm College (Petraeus lives in New Hampshire). Despite these accounts, Petraeus has categorically asserted that he has no political ambitions. As of January 2011, petraeus2012.com hadn't been updated since October 2009, and had an alexa.com ranking of 9,181,378 (marginally better than draftcheney2012.com's ranking but significantly behind draftchristie2012.com's).
