  • In 2002, Risch spent $360,000 of his own money to win the $27,000-a-year, part-time post of Lieutenant Governor, then succeeded Governor Dirk Kempthorne upon the latter's resignation in 2006

  • In 1994, Risch lost the primary election for a state Senate seat in the second political defeat of his career

  • In a dramatic 1988 upset, Risch was defeated for re-election to the Idaho Senate by a Democratic political newcomer
