Senator Burris is a Class III Senator (Up for Re-Election in 2010)

Noteworthy Roland Burris News:

  • In July, 2009, Burris announced he would not run in 2010, despite having earlier indicated otherwise
  • In 2009, a transcript of a November 2008 wiretap was released; Burris told a Blagojevich rep he would "give him a check" for the Senate seat; Burris signed a 2009 affidavit denying any such contact
  • In 2008, Burris was appointed by Governor Rod Blagojevich to replace Barack Obama as Junior Senator from Illinois (Blagojevich later claimed that only Burris had the ego to fight to be seated)
  • In 1998, in one of four straight electoral defeats, Burris referred to opponents as "nonqualified white boys"
  • In 1993, Burris helped organize Chicago's first Gun Turn-in Day. The following year, he admitted that he kept a handgun in his home which he had "forgotten about"
  • In 1992, Illinois Attorney General Burris refused to heed the urgings of an Assistant Attorney General to re-examine the case of a Death Row inmate who was later exonerated
