Winter Park, Colorado had its beginnings as the two small settlements of Old Town and Hideaway Park. Old Town owed its existence to the construction of the Moffat Tunnel (which was completed in 1928), and Hideaway Park owed its existence to the nearby ski resort of Winter Park, which began operations in 1940. The Town of Winter Park was founded on August 1, 1978, and annexed the West Portal Village two years later. West Portal Village became the home of the base of the Mary Jane ski mountain and buildings such as the Iron Horse Resort.
Winter Park is also known for its golf facilities usable during the summer months, in addition to its ski resort.
